  • Larvae are a newborn form of insects going through the state of metamorphosis. They can cause havoc in homes and are very often more troublesome than their matured counterparts.

The adult form of the larvae usually looks totally different from its original appearance and has different bodily organs. For instance, the common house-fly starts off as a cream-colored larva which burrows into the food material on which they hatched. After four to seven days, they grow and pupate, its skin forms a case about a quarter of an inch long. Once the adult fly is fully formed, it breaks open the case and emerges as the pest we all know. Its population doubles within a month and it usually lays its eggs on decaying matters like animal manure, human excrement and garbage. There are many other types of larvae such as butterflies, grasshoppers, moths, mosquitoes and others. All are equally deserving of the title: “pests” because eggs and larvae are where the majority of problems come from with pest infestations. It is best to control these insects before they contaminate food, carpets, clothes, upholstery and stored goods, not to mention our health and wellbeing.

Prevention is always better than cure and in the case of larvae, it is extremely important to keep your home and environment clean so as to avoid all forms of pest infestations and contamination. The second way to deter them is to eradicate their potential breeding grounds. This can be done by ensuring all rubbish or garden waste is disposed of carefully, dormant water, damp spots and earthy mounds are all potential breeding spots so these should be watched and cleared away if possible. Making sure all possible entry ways to your home are blocked up or sealed, this is places such as cracks in your walls, leaky seals in your window frames, crevices in your woodwork, missing slates or roof tiles and any vents or animal flaps that are unnecessary.

If you are experiencing the signs of the larvae’s presence in your home, you should begin your quest to eliminate them by first locating their breeding source. Remove and destroy the breeding medium and kill any adult flies/moths etc with a suitable fly spray to reduce infestation. Pyrethrin sprays are good for killing the flying insects but should be used with care. Insecticide powders mixed with water to spray exterior surfaces where these insects will land is also a good option to take since you only need to do this once a month. Other materials to use are fly papers, fly traps, insect zappers and other electronic traps. However, when all these fails, it is time to turn to the professionals who will always know the best course of action to take and what to do to wipe out the infestation in your home.

As you are probably beginning to realize, there are plenty of larvae varieties around, just readily waiting to invade your home. These can be dealt with by over the counter insecticides but there are also a selection of treatments that only the pest control professionals will truly know how to handle. By calling in the pest controllers you ensure your safety, as you don’t have to handle the dangerous chemicals required for fully eradicating these pests. You can also get valuable advice from the professionals, which will help to prevent future infestations. Getting professional help is guaranteed to be the best investment you can make for yourself, your family and your home.
