  • Spiders come in many shapes and sizes, most are harmless, some give a venomous bite and some (in hotter climates) can be deadly.

In the UK the House Spider is the most commonly found spider which will spin its web all around your house and outdoor buildings. The House Spider is sometimes known as the Web Spider because it spins so many of them and frequently abandons one web in order to build a new one which they hope will attract more prey. They mostly live on small insects such as fruit flies, which they catch in their web then kill it with a sharp bite, followed by a venomous injection.

The female House Spider will produce 250 eggs in a silken sac in the centre of its web. Sometimes they even include several egg sacs on the one web but only if they are in peaceful conditions with a suitable temperature and humidity. The eggs usually hatch within ten days and the spiderlings stay in the sac for one moult, they then emerge and spin threads to new locations. They can survive for 20 days without eating so the survival rate and reproduction rate of the House spider is pretty high.

House spiders are completely harmless and are really only a pest because people don’t like the look of them or the mess of webs they make, they don’t pose a health risk.

The adult house spider has a body length of between 6 and 10mm. Its body is yellow-brown with faint markings and a pale grey brown abdomen with short hairs. It can live for several years.

The House Spiders usually make their webs in wide, open areas, like from roof beams in sheds. The most efficient way to get rid of them is by vacuuming them away.

To prevent them entering in the first place you should seal up any cracks in walls or window frames and aim to keep a fairly good level of hygiene and cleanliness.

Spiders are attracted to an area with high levels of insects because it is prey for them to feed on. Therefore you should deter the smaller insects, in order to keep the spiders at bay. This can be done by keeping exterior lights out until needed.

If you really hate spiders and believe you have an unmanageable infestation of them, you should contact the local pest control experts for advice and assistance with removal. This site is full of information on various spider types and other pests, so you should have no trouble identifying the type of infestation you are experiencing.
